BLOED is 'n vloeistof wat voortdurend sirkuleer en wat die liggaam voed, suurstof en afval verwyder. Bloed is meestal vloeibaar, met talle selle en proteïene wat daarin hang, wat bloed "dikker" maak as suiwer water. Die gemiddelde persoon het ongeveer 5 liter (meer as 'n liter) bloed. 'N VLOEISTOEMDE PLASMA vorm ongeveer die helfte van die bloedinhoud. Plasma bevat proteïene wat bloed help stol, stowwe deur die bloed vervoer en ander funksies verrig. • Witbloedselle wat infeksies bestry
• Bloedplaatjies, kleiner selle wat bloed help stol

BLOED word deur bloedvate (are en are) gelei. Daar word verhoed dat bloed in die bloedvate stol, deur die gladheid en die fyn balans van stollingsfaktore. Bloedgroep: 'n toets vir verenigbaarheid voordat 'n bloedoortapping ontvang word. Die belangrikste bloedgroepe (A, B, AB en O) word bepaal deur die proteïenmerke (antigenen) wat op die oppervlak van rooibloedselle voorkom.
Coombs-toets: 'n BLOEDtoets op soek na teenliggaampies wat aan rooibloedselle kan bind en vernietig. Swanger vroue en mense met bloedarmoede kan Coombs-toetse ondergaan.
